A Marx Generator is a clever way of charging a number of capacitors in parallel, then discharging them in series. Originally described by E. Marx in 1924, Marx generators are probably the most common way of generating high voltage impulses for testing when the voltage level required is higher than available charging supply voltages. Furthermore, above about 200 kV, the discharge capacitor becomes very expensive and bulky. The Fitch circuit is becoming popular where very good control over impulse voltage is required.

This is a great kit for building intuition about the function and physics of Marx generators and high voltage DC circuits. Kit worked right out of the box, produces consistent 6-7" sparks when discharged through air. Requires a 24VDC power supply, draws 2-3 amps of current.
I took my kit out of the box, connected my bench power supply, and turned it on. Easy!
My only surprise was that the kit came fully assembled. I was expecting a box of parts and some instructions. No complaints however - forming the spark gaps by hand looks like a lot of work so I'm glad it was pre-assembled.
