Builder of the World’s Smallest Internal Combustion Engines by George Luhrs | EngineDIY
The full name of this engine is this name, shortened to Luhrs engine
This model engine is a model engine designed and invented by the famous George Luhrs in 2001. George Luhrs spent most of his life building engines of various sizes. As a child, he built a variety of models, including free flight and "U-control" airplanes, model boats and model cars. George also repaired and rebuilt small engines and began working on cars as a teenager. To accomplish these things, he learned how to use a range of tools, including machine shop equipment needed to build and repair parts. In addition, George Luhrs and Craftsman of the Year Pierre Scerri were featured in a New York Times article.
However, George passed away in 2014, resulting in many of his engine models being out of print. In order to continue his spirit and in honor of this great craftsman, we have reproduced this Luhrs engine, which features an overhead valve structure with spark plug ignition, a fan shroud on the right side of the cam housing, and a mini cooling fan inside. Forced air-cooled design, external mechanical ignition (no hall sensor), separate crankshaft lubrication box is mainly aluminum alloy.
This single-cylinder, spark plug gas engine has a bore of 1/8” and a stroke of 5/32”. It displaces only .0019 cubic inches. George designed and built this tiny engine from scratch in 1996. He noted that it buzzes like a bee when running. Part of a US penny can be seen at the bottom of the photo for scale reference. (Photo courtesy of Thomas Oversluizen.)
A close-up of the cylinder and carburetor from the same engine. The external pushrods that operate the valves can also be seen. At the time of this writing, nobody had yet to challenge George’s claim that this is the smallest running spark plug fired gas engine ever built. (Photo courtesy of Thomas Oversluizen.)
In recent years, the EngineDIY team & MUSA factory have released two single-cylinder engines in tribute to the classics "Whippet" and "Red Dog", which have impressed many model engine enthusiasts.
In September 2023, we will once again pay tribute to a great craftsman - George Luhrs. Once again we pay tribute to a great craftsman, George Luhrs, who spent most of his life building model engines of all sizes, but sadly passed away in 2014, and in honor of this great craftsman and to keep his spirit alive, we bring you the George Luhrs Engine, based on the work of George Luhrs. In honor of this great craftsman and to keep his spirit alive, we are bringing you a re-built mini single-cylinder four-stroke engine based on the George Luhrs Engine.
The engine components are CNC machined, with a hardened crankshaft and shims. The engine is designed with an overhead valve structure, forced air-cooled with centrifugal fan, external mechanical ignition system with adjustable ignition advance angle, and carries a small visible and transparent fuel tank.
HOMAGE TO CLASSIC: This engine will cause more retro feelings and resonance among engine modelers and players, which is impressive and causes wide attention and discussion.
Exquisite appearance: this miniature vertical single-cylinder four-stroke engine has a unique and beautiful appearance, with overall silver color scheme and compact mini structure, you will surely love its working condition.
Ingenious design: the engine adopts overhead valve structure, the right cam housing is a fan cover with a mini cooling fan inside, external mechanical ignition trigger with adjustable ignition advance angle.
Excellent quality: fully CNC machined and manufactured, hardened crankshaft with axle shingles. The surface is sandblasted and anodized to show the mechanical texture and beauty of the engine.
EXCELLENT COLLECTION: It is ornamental engine, it is a perfect addition for engine model enthusiasts and collectors, and it is one of the indispensable engine types at model shows, and it is also a great personalized gift for mechanical enthusiasts.
