Steam engine: an engine worked by steam, typically one in which a sliding piston in a cylinder is moved by the expansive action of the steam generated in a boiler.
Story of the Steam Engine
The rapid growth of industry from about the mid-18th century created a need for new sources of motive power. This situation, , set the stage for the development and widespread use of the steam engine, the first practical device for converting thermal energy to mechanical energy.
The foundations for the use of steam power are often traced to the experimental work of the French physicist Denis Papin. In 1679 Papin invented a type of pressure cooker, a closed vessel with a tightly fitting lid that confined steam until high pressure was generated.
Thomas Savery, studied Papin’s work and built a steam-driven suction machine for removing water from coal mines. Savery’s machine (patented in 1698) consisted of a boiler, a closed, water-filled reservoir, and a series of valves. Steam was introduced into the reservoir, and the pressure of the steam forced the water out through a one-way outlet valve until the vessel was empty. Water was then sprayed over the surface of the vessel to condense the steam and create a vacuum capable of drawing up more water through a valve below. Unfortunately the vacuum created was not perfect, and so water could only be lifted to a limited height.
Thomas Newcomen who invented the atmospheric steam engine. The invention was an improvement over Thomas Savery's previous design. With Newcomen's engine, the intensity of pressure was not limited by the pressure of the steam, a departure from what Thomas Savery had patented in 1698. In 1712, Thomas Newcomen, together with John Calley, built their first engine on top of a water-filled mine shaft and used it to pump water out of the mine. The Newcomen engine was the predecessor to the Watt engine.
James Watt who was renowned for the improvements he made to the steam engine. While working for the University of Glasgow in 1765, Watt was assigned the task of repairing a Newcomen engine that was deemed inefficient but the best steam engine of its time. That started the inventor working on several improvements to Newcomen's design. The most notable improvement was Watt's 1769 patent for a separate condenser connected to a cylinder by a valve. Unlike Newcomen's engine, Watt's design had a condenser that could be cool while the cylinder was hot. Eventually, Watt's engine would become the dominant design for all modern steam engines and helped bring about the industrial revolution.
Reciprocating engine: A heat engine also known as a piston engine that uses one or more reciprocating pistons to convert pressure into a rotating motion. The main types are the internal combustion engine, used extensively in motor vehicles; the steam engine, the mainstay of the Industrial Revolution; and the niche application Stirling engine.
