An aeolipile (or aeolipyle, or eolipile), also known as a Hero's engine, is a simple, bladeless radial steam turbine which spins when the central water container is heated. It is the very first steam engine, a radial steam jet reaction turbine, an invention attributed to Hero of Alexandria sometime between 10 and 70 AD.
Water within the spherical container is heated to produce steam which exits through nozzles directed at right angles to the radial direction, and by Newton’s third law the steam ejected by these jets produce a torque about the rotation axis.

My grandson loved this little "steam engine", but I (grandma) would have loved if it had included a syringe, and advice as to what to use as fuel. We began by using isopropyl alcohol 91% and it smoked a lot, hiding the beautiful gold color. Could one portion of fuel have been included with the model and instructions as to where to get more? Is denatured 100% ethanol a better choice? Also I am not sure whether it is necessary to use distilled water to prevent the nozzles from becoming blocked. So far so good, (we have been using tap water) but if they become blocked over time will we have to unclog them, or will the pressure blow them out, or is there a danger that the water container explodes? These are questions that my grandson asked, and I am not sure that my answers are correct.
Kid loves it, nice educational toy, high quality material and execution
Good quality of materials and workmanship and the kid loves it
Wonderful little hero engine. Smaller than I thought it would be, but it is still a remarkable little engine. A wonderful addition to my collection and teaching resources.
